Non-nutrient bioactive substances of pulses.
Pulses supply many bioactive substances found in minor amounts in food, but which may have significant metabolic and/or physiological effects. These compounds have long been classified as antinutritional factors, but many studies have reconsidered their impact on health. Some could play a role in the prevention of the major diseases of affluent societies. As these compounds can be beneficial or...
متن کاملNutrient Acquisition: The Generation of Bioactive Vitamin B12 by Microalgae
Many microalgae acquire vitamin B12 from marine prokaryotes. A new study demonstrates that vitamin B12 is synthesized by planktonic cyanobacteria as pseudocobalamin, a form not bioactive in microalgae. However, some microalgae can remodel pseudocobalamin to the active cobalamin form, adding complexity to our assessment of active vitamin B12 in the environment.
متن کاملMicroalgae as a source of high-value bioactive compounds.
Microalgae are one of the oldest microorganisms, that grow in various hostile environments, ranging from deserts to Antarctica. The microalgae sustain life in such harsh environments through generation of secondary metabolites. Microalgae biosynthesize a large number of diverse bioactive metabolites with activities on cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and infectious diseases. Here, we highlig...
متن کاملBioactive compounds from Microalgae and its different applications- a review
Microalgae are capable producers of food, feed supplement, chemicals, and biofuels. Marine microalgae and cyanobacteria are rich in several chemical compounds therefore, they could be used in some biological applications related with health benefits. Through microalgae, a wide variety of compounds such as polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), or phytosterols can be obtained. However,...
متن کاملA review of bioactive compounds of cyanobacteria and microalgae as cosmetically useful supplements
Today, the valuable metabolites of microalgae are widely used in the production of many cosmetic products, as the biomass of algae contains pigments, proteins, essential fatty acids, polysaccharides, vitamins and minerals, all of which are present in both natural foods and cosmetics are used. In fact, these secondary metabolites with anti-blemish and anti-microbial, anti-aging, sunscreen and sk...
